Abhorant

David Scott’s Abhorrent makes me grateful that I don’t have a basement. The female protagonist in this short film does, though, and there she discovers something about her husband that the audience already knows about him just by looking at him. That said, there’s some competent and crisp film making here.

Fugue

Tomas Street’s lean and pulpy crime-thriller isn’t lacking for sex, violence, and seedy characters. Not one of this cast of wretches has a sentimental bone in their body. If you enjoy sordid crime capers, then you’re in luck because Fugue goes to some dark places. With cinematographer James Griffith’s beautifully-lit sets and the slick production design, you can really feel the piss and vinegar coursing through the film’s veins. Fugue has a serious mean streak.

Backpackers

In an attempt to get over a serious case of cold feet, Backpackers finds recently engaged Ryan (Noah Reid, Titanic) and Beth (Meghan Heffern, Almost Heroes) embarking on separate European adventures leading up to their wedding. While traveling they are free to act single, adopting the mantra "what happens in Europe, stays in Europe." But hours into Ryan's adventure with his party animal and womanizing best friend Brandon (Dillon Casey, Nikita), he realizes he's made a huge mistake and sets off in search of her. The only problem is he has no idea where she could be - they never exchanged itineraries. This marks the start of a wild adventure that takes the duo to the Amalfi coast, Rome, Berlin, Prague and Paris as they search for Beth, try to avoid an annoying Aussie, dodge a homicidal maniac and fit in a little action on the way.

The Masked Saint

"The Masked Saint" is based on a true story about one pastor's mission to help his community by risking his identity and returns to his former life as a wrestler. The triumphant story follows one man's journey and struggle between helping others and the consequences he faces doing this.

Mayday

Catastrophic incidents in aviation history are meticulously re-enacted, providing insight into what went wrong and if the crashes and near-disasters could have been prevented. Accounts from survivors combine with computer images to weave these gripping tales, and expert testimony reveals the hows and whys behind these events, some of which have resulted in important changes to aviation safety and regulations.
